Wadden Sea tidal basins and the mediating role of the North Sea in ecological processes: scaling up of management?

چکیده
The scale of human pressures on marine ecosystems gradually increased from local to global effects during the last centuries. Global warming, sea level rise and trans-oceanic spread of alien species are now or will be major drivers of ecological change in the Wadden Sea. Eutrophication may rank as a superregional effect as the organic matter turnover in the Wadden Sea is driven by import from the North Sea. These effects will not necessarily be uniform across the entire Wadden Sea. A major challenge will be to understand the interactions between global factors with local conditions, both changed by human interference. A conceptual understanding of factors leading to regional differences within the Wadden Sea is only slowly evolving. Based on our understanding of the eutrophication process and a regional comparison of the eutrophication status of the Wadden Sea we propose that wider tidal basins (with a large distance between barrier islands and the mainland) generally have a lower eutrophication status than narrower tidal basins (with a short distance between barrier islands and mainland). This may be explained by a “dilution” of the imported organic matter in wider tidal basins. The interactions between global and super-regional effects on local ecological developments in the Wadden Sea will be complex and pose a major challenge to science, Wadden Sea management and the assessment of ecosystem health as required by EU legislation. The implications of integrating a North Sea view into Wadden Sea management are discussed and we conclude that the river basin approach of the EU Water Framework Directive is not appropriate for the Wadden Sea. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Monitoring and Change Detection of Wadden Sea Areas Using Lidar Data
In coastal areas morphological changes of various kinds are caused by tidal flows, storms, climate change, and human activities. For these reasons a recurrent monitoring becomes necessary in order to detect undesired changes at early stages enabling rapid countermeasures to mitigate or minimize potential harm or hazard. The morphology of the terrain can be represented by highly precise digital ...
متن کاملLong-term displacement of intertidal seagrass and mussel beds by expanding large sandy bedforms in the northern Wadden Sea
a r t i c l e i n f o On aerial photographs, sandy tidal flats display (1) large sandy bedforms (N10 m long, N 3 m wide), indicating effects of strong hydrodynamics on sediment relief, and (2) beds of seagrass and mussels, indicating stable sediment conditions. These physical and biogenic structures have been mapped from aerial photographs taken in a back-barrier tidal basin of the North Sea co...
متن کاملChanges in distribution and decrease in numbers during migration of the bivalve Macoma balthica
The population development of the 1998 year class of the bivalve Macoma balthica was studied by repeated sampling of a tidal flat area in the eastern Dutch Wadden Sea from May 1998 to August 2000. The juveniles migrated twice, once in mid-1998 from their primary settlement locations in the low sandy intertidal to the nursery in the high intertidal (spring migration, 25% of all juvenile M. balth...
متن کاملSensitivity Analysis of the Dimensionless Parameter VU based on Morphological Characteristics of some Estuaries on the Northern Borders of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
Estuaries and bays are areas with a wide range of hydrodynamic and morphological phenomena. The existence of this diversity in environmental processes will lead to complex and sometimes unknown interactions in their structure. Understanding the behavior and environmental conditions of these beaches will improve the attitude of coastal users for better management of these areas. Many classificat...
متن کاملThe layered structure in exchange flows between two basins (Middle and Southern basins of the Caspian Sea)
Ocean waters often show layered structures especially where exchange flow between two basins occurs. These structures are often attributed to processes such as double.diffusive convection, internal waves, turbulent modulated mixing. In this paper by examining the vertical structures of temperature, salinity and density, of the middle parts of Caspian Sea it is shown that such layered structure ...
